In 1956, I heard that a young Brazilian boy named Aldemir Martins had won the international design reward at the Bienal in Veneza. I was great for me. And I thought: if a Brazilian artist is able to win such an important prize like that one abroad and subsist upon his art, I'm also able to do that.

In 1960, Mabe won the Fiat Prize at the Bienal in Veneza.
When talking about that reward, he again remembers Aldemir: "He turned into a great friend, a sincere brother".
         And he said joking:
"During the parties at home, some people consider we resemble each other
and call it in question if he is Japanese or if I come from northeastern Brazil"
.

 Aldemir Martins:

I've known Mabe when I handed a prize to him. He was the artist at that time. He loved happiness, he loved people. He was the only artist who was granted a party by his birthday. The 14th. of September was a permanent party.
Mabe has created a life style.

Roberto Campos

The year must have been 1965, when I used to enjoy great help from the Brazilian Embassy in Washington D.C. It was Juracy Magalhães, the Brazilian Ambassador, who introduced me to Roberto Campos, at the time the Planning Minister.
We struck up a friendship when he bought a painting I was the working on at the embassy. Twenty years have passed by during which I must confess having received much help from, Roberto Campos and his wife. I have met some of the world's most famous people at the parties, he used to throw.
Furthermore, when he was Brazil's Amabassador to Great Britain, he used to open his official London residence to me, as if where my own house.

Walter Wey

My first display in the exterior occurred in 1960, in Uruguay. It was at the same time, my first trip to the exterior, since that it arrives at Brazil.

Thanks to aid of Mr. Walter Wey, who was the person in charge of the Deparatamento de Belas Arts in the Embassy of Brazil in that country, I could carry through the display in the National Museum of Beautiful Arts. There I reached great popularity for the numerous modern líricas workmanships that I displayed.

Juracy Magalhães

On the occasion of the exhibition "Ten Nippo-Brazilian Painters", held in the salons of Washington's Panamerican Union, Juracy Magalhães, who was ambassador at the time, suggested that I stay for a longer period and do a few paintings.
He invited me to the official embassy residence, with the intention to introduce me to American art collectors.
I stayed there for 50 days, during which I produced a great number of works and was presented to several famous collectors. One of them left a lasting impression on me: David Rockefeller.
Juracy Magalhães and his wife are, to me, an unforgettable couple.

Despite having been naturalized as a Brazilian citizen in 1960, he was notorious in Japan, where he was used to go every year. He loved singing, and the "karaokês" by Sunday nights were a way to get the family together. They were real Japanese song festivals, but there was always a space for the Latin one named "Besame Mucho", with the artist's strong Nippon accent.
